Kukuli is what happens when three women join forces to share Peruvian artisanal pieces with appreciative buyers.  With 8 years (and counting) spent living in South America and 10 years in retail buying, we are passionate about integrating the “sentimiento” - or feeling - of traditional handiwork into a modern lifestyle.

We've grown weary of mass produced products and are privileged to work alongside small artisan communities to offer one-of-a-kind and small batch products for our customers. In this way we encourage communities to pass on their ancestrial skills and trade.

By focusing on alpaca fibers we promote a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle while offering our clientele heirloom quality products.

WHY WE CHOOSE ALPACA

Alpaca wool is hypoallergenic. Each individual fiber has a rounded rather than barbed end. This means that unlike other types of wool, Alpaca wool will not itch your skin.

Alpaca is a hollow core fiber. Similar in structure to polar bear hair, this allows the fiber to act as an insulator, holding in your natural body heat, without the bulk of other natural fibers.  The hollow core makes for stronger fiber - up to 7 times stronger than sheep’s wool - which makes for a longer product life.

Alpaca fiber does not contain lanolin.  Not only is lanolin the culprit of many allergens and dust mites, but as it is an oil, chemicals are often used to remove it from wool.

Alpaca is most similar in touch to a cross between cashmere and merino wool, lending a luxurious hand feel to any alpaca based textile.

Many people ask, “Are alpacas injured to create these products?”  Whether shopping for adult or baby alpaca, you can rest assured that alpacas NEED to be regularly sheared.  Typically, they are sheared once or twice a year, with baby alpaca referring to the coat coming from the first shear of the alpaca.

For any product containing animal hide, we work hard to ensure whole animal use and the humane treatment of these beautiful animals.
